Boston Photo Walk

 I went into Boston last Sunday super early and shot 5 rolls of Kodak Gold 200 with my 1967 Hasselblad 500C. I’m still learning this system but so far I’m absolutely loving this camera. I own a mirrorless Nikon Z8 and I honestly think the photos I’m getting with the Hasselblad are far superior. Film just looks much more real than digital.

The Loons Are Back!

 After a long cold, snowy winter I finally had the opportunity to get back out on my kayak and do some wildlife photography. A lake less than 30 miles from my house is home to a pair of nesting bald eagles and many common loons. It’s always a great place for wildlife observation and relaxing with a cup of coffee in relative solitude. I try to get there at sunrise so I almost always have the place to myself. After a while a few fisherman may show up. On this first outing of the season I was treated to three separate encounters with the mystically elegant water creature called the common loon. They came right up to my kayak, giving me some great photo opportunities. The trick with loons is to stop paddling the moment you see one and hope they come to you. A lot of times they do. Rekindling my Photography with Film.

  TMax 400shot with the YashicaMat    This past winter I’ve had a major resurgence in my love for photography. Without a doubt it’s because I started shooting film. To be fair, I never stopped shooting film completely, but over the past few years I’ve maybe shot 3 or 4 rolls a year. Either with my YashicaMat 120 camera or the Nikon F4s 35mm camera. So  far this year I’ve shot about a dozen rolls and it’s only April. Now with the recent acquisition of my Hasselblad 500C, I’m completely obsessed. I have a steady stream of new film showing up in the mailbox and a steady stream of exposed film going off to The Darkroom in California for development. Here’s the thing for me, I absolutely love the look of a medium format film image, even more so with the Hasselblad. The whole process is pure magic. You pick out a film stock and place your order.
